Scott Thompson

Educator & Cellist

Music is a constant inspiration for me and I am fortunate to be able to both teach and perform throughout the Bay Area. I first picked up the cello when I was 10 years old and I have not put it down since. For me, the sound of the cello possesses a captivating beauty that conveys profound messages transcending the limitations of verbal expression, reaching depths beyond the confines of language.

After years of studying at the SF Conservatory of Music and with world-renowned cello teachers—including Jennifer Culp, Ron Leonard, and Irene Sharp—I learned not only how to play my instrument, but also how to teach the gift of music.  I enjoy teaching cello because it allows me to share my passion for music and inspire others to explore their creativity and expressiveness through this beautiful instrument.  I work with people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.  I work closely with you to create an authentic learning environment to meet your musical goals.

Along with teaching and performing, I play cello bedside for people at the end of their lives. Listening to the cello offers people an opportunity for quiet introspection, presence, and beauty during this profound end-of-life experience and I have found this practice to be of great support to families.

As a professional educator, I have spent the last fifteen years teaching K-8 PE and coaching both youth and adult swimming in the East Bay. The skills I have helped students cultivate in their athletic pursuits translate to learning the Cello—both endeavors require integrity and also the development of specific movements with the body. As a teacher who has experience across disciplines, I have developed an instinctive teaching style that enables me to help each student specifically.
